BRT - Builder, Architect, & Designer Roundtable

Mark Vornberg from Dick Clark + Associates will be discussing blueprints for Builder-Developers.

Mark Vornberg has worked at Dick Clark + Associates for 28 years, and has been the Principal since 2017.  DC+A does both residential and commercial architecture and Dick Clark is known as the godfather of Modern Architecture in Austin.  Mark has headed the DC+A commercial efforts for many years and has lead the design of dozens of restaurants, bars, offices, retail, multi-family mixed-use, and even a few hotels.

In addition to his day job designing and managing at DC+A, Mark has used his extensive knowledge of the land development code to pursue residential and commercial development in Central Austin as a side hobby and in now a serial enterpeneur.  Initially this started as doing residential renovations in the urban core, then later ground up residential and ADU combo property or two as successes created some cash flow.  Mark tends to go all in on these projects.  In 2015, Mark and his wife developed their first commercial project, a boutique hotel called Hotel Eleven on East 11th street, which they owned and his wife ran until 2022.  They even lived on site at the hotel for many years.

Along the way Mark established the Architect as Developer Happy Hour, a group of Architects and related consultants that has monthly Happy Hour meetings to help spread the opportunities to develop financially viable and well designed projects.  The Architect as Developers mission statement is simply “Showing that well designed projects can make money too.”  In 2019, Mark spearheaded Dick Clark + Associates to renovate a old pawn shop on East 7th street to be their new offices and moved the firm to East Austin from downtown.

After the success of that office project, DC+A has partnered with a several other related Real Estate and Construction firms and is currently developing a 4 story, 50,000 s.f. office a couple blocks away to move all these related groups into as owner occupiers, and a one stop shop of design and construction.  That new project, called Workbench, is designed as mass timber and slated to be completed at the end of 2025.
